Best Locations for Family Photos on Bald Head Island
There’s something magical about Bald Head Island that makes it the perfect place for family photos. Maybe it’s the way the sunlight dances on the marsh, the timeless charm of Old Baldy, or the way the waves kiss the shore at sunset. As a photographer who’s lucky enough to capture so many beautiful moments here, I can tell you—this island is something special. And for me, it’s even more meaningful because I got married here in May 2024 at the chapel and celebrated at Marina Park. So, trust me when I say I know all the best spots to make your family photos something you’ll treasure forever.
When you book a session with AEM Creative Photography, I’ll meet you (or a family member) at the ferry terminal on the island. From there, we’ll hop on a golf cart and head out to explore some of the most picturesque locations Bald Head has to offer. Here are my absolute favorite spots to capture the beauty of your family and the island.
Bridge with the Lighthouse in the Background
This is one of those classic Bald Head Island shots that never gets old. The bridge spans over the marsh, with Old Baldy standing proudly in the background. The soft marsh grasses, winding water, and historic charm of the lighthouse make for a stunning family portrait.
Marina Park – The Wedding Reception Spot!
Since this was the spot where I celebrated my own wedding reception, I know firsthand just how breathtaking it is. The combination of the lighthouse, the marsh, and the open space makes for a perfect setting. Whether it’s a big family gathering or a more intimate session, Marina Park offers a little bit of everything.
Bald Head Island Marina
If your family loves the water, the marina is a fantastic place to capture that classic nautical feel. The docks, the boats, and the reflections on the water create a relaxed but stunning backdrop. Plus, if you time it just right, you might catch a sailboat drifting in for an extra dreamy shot.
The Lighthouse Grounds & Chapel
Old Baldy isn’t just a landmark—it’s a must-have backdrop for any Bald Head Island photo session. The surrounding grounds have beautiful trees draped with Spanish moss, creating a dreamy, southern vibe. There’s even a cool tree that kids love to climb on, making for fun and unique family shots. The chapel itself is a picture-perfect spot that captures the island’s timeless beauty.
The Beach – Sunset Perfection
No Bald Head Island session is complete without beach photos. My favorite part? The way the sun sets directly over the ocean, painting the sky with vibrant colors. My top pick for beach access is Beach Access #13, located in front of the Bald Head Island Club. It’s close to the lighthouse and marina, and if we’re lucky, we might even catch a sailboat or cargo ship in the background, adding an extra touch of magic.
Beach Access #1 – River & Marsh Views
This access point gives you the best of both worlds—views of the Cape Fear River and the marsh tucked into the middle of the island. If you want a mix of scenery in your family photos, this is a great spot to consider.
Your Vacation Rental – Easy & Convenient
If you’re vacationing with a big group, sometimes it makes the most sense to have your session at your rental home—especially if you’re staying on the beach. Getting everyone on golf carts and moving to different locations can be time-consuming, so I can come to you! Whether it’s right in front of your house or the closest beach access, we can make it easy while still capturing beautiful moments.

Since Bald Head Island requires a ferry ride and golf cart travel, I only offer 30-minute, 45-minute, and one-hour sessions to ensure we make the most of our time. I typically recommend at least 45 minutes, especially for larger families, as getting around the island takes some time.
30-Minute Session – $450
45-Minute Session – $525 (Recommended for most families!)
One-Hour Session – $600 (Best for large groups with multiple family combinations!)
This pricing includes all additional costs for parking, ferry tickets, and extra travel time.
