A frequently asked question during the scheduling process is, “Which spot on the island do you recommend for our family photo session?” With so many excellent options available, it can be challenging to provide a single recommendation. To assist you, I have compiled a list of some of my clients' favorite locations. Below, you will find a diverse selection of scenic backdrops to help you choose the ideal setting for your upcoming family photo session.
Oak Island Lighthouse
The Oak Island Lighthouse, an iconic landmark on Oak Island, is a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists. This scenic location not only serves as a guiding beacon but also provides an array of picturesque backdrops that capture the essence of coastal beauty. Accompanied by a long wooden walkway that leads to the sand, the charming architecture of the lighthouse harmonizes with the natural elements nearby, including graceful sea oats that sway gently in the ocean breeze.

Located in Caswell Beach towards the eastern end of the island, visitors will find ample parking available in the lighthouse overflow lot, which is conveniently situated just 100 yards past the lighthouse on the beach side of the road. Its easy accessibility combined with the stunning coastal scenery makes the Oak Island Lighthouse a delightful spot for capturing those cherished family moments against the backdrop of one of Oak Island's most beloved landmarks. Caswell Beach Access
One of the top locations for family photo sessions on Oak Island is the public beach access in Caswell Beach, which provides breathtaking backdrops for your photography session. Two wooden walkways lead down to the sandy shoreline, offering an ideal starting and ending point for your session against the backdrop of a glowing sunset. The natural dunes and flowing sea oats create a classic and picturesque setting at the beginning of the shoot, especially as the sun peaks over the dunes, casting a soft and warm glow.
The expansive beach is often less crowded, giving you and your family ample space to enjoy your session without interference from other visitors. Thanks to the island's curve, this access allows for stunning sunset views almost year-round, including the summer months when the sun sets over the Intracoastal Waterway side of the island. This ensures amazing sunset photographs regardless of the season.

Oceancrest Pier
The Oceancrest Pier, once recognized as the longest pier in North Carolina, is an ideal destination for fishing enthusiasts and photographers alike. Typically, the photography session begins on the left side of the pier, with it extending gracefully into the right side of the frame. We often transition to beneath the pier to capture the striking symmetrical A-frame structure, creating a visually pleasing composition. Additional creative shots can be taken around the base of the pilings, including a unique old cut-off piling that adds an interesting platform for individual portraits.
As we progress to the final location over the dunes, you will find beautiful sea oats gently swaying in the breeze against a backdrop of soft OKI sand. For sessions scheduled at sunset, the sky presents an array of vibrant colors, enhancing the overall ambiance and beauty of your images.
Parking is conveniently available at two public beach accesses located at 14th Street and 16th Street. From these points, you can cross over the dunes (legally) to meet for family photography sessions under the pier and capture unforgettable moments.
The Point
The Point stands out as a premier destination on Oak Island, offering visitors the widest expanse of beach for relaxation and recreation. The sandy shoreline stretches endlessly, providing ample space for beachgoers to bask in the sun or create treasured memories. With the majestic ocean as a backdrop, The Point is particularly favored for capturing special moments through photography, whether it be family portraits, romantic engagements, or beachside gatherings.
The expansive area of The Point features a gradual drop-off into the water, which is perfect for taking fun and exciting photos in the tidal pools. As you wade through these shallow waters, be prepared to get wet, adding a splash of spontaneity to your pictures. However, before you dive into the ocean waves, don’t overlook the stunning sea oats lining the beach. These natural elements provide a beautiful and picturesque backdrop for portraits, enhancing the overall aesthetic of your photo session.
Accessibility is another highlight of The Point. There is ample parking available at the end of Oak Island, but it is essential to pay attention to the signage that guides visitors through the one-way lanes of the parking lot. Once you have safely parked your vehicle, you will find that the sandy shores are just a few steps away, allowing for a seamless transition from parking to your photo session on the beach. Additional Options in the Area
Southport
Historic downtown Southport offers a change of pace for family photos while still providing beautiful, coastal backdrops. From Franklin Square and Keziah Parks lined with oak trees and gazebos to the Cape Fear River, “America’s Happiest Seaside Town” is a great option for family photos by the coast.
Bald Head Island
A secluded island only accessible by ferry or a private boat, Bald Head is a quaint island that mimics the Hamptons. BHI offers many protected marshlands that serve as breathtaking backdrops.
Many popular spots for family photos include the iconic bridge with the “Old Baldy” lighthouse in the distance, the Kent Mitchell Trail that weaves its way through native live oaks, marsh and of course the expansive beach overlooking the mouth of the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the island’s positioning, sunsets over the ocean are a guarantee during all seasons promising a colorful backdrop that will make you say “wow.”
